“Margo Asher” a semifinalist

My contemporary drama “Margo Asher Died Here” was chosen as a semifinalist for the New American Voices Festival sponsored by The Landing Theatre Company of Houston.

The Landing sets as its goal to explore the diversity of American playwriting and invention, facilitate the development of new American works, and develop a highly respected season of new, contemporary and classic American plays – all while enriching the local artistic community.

I have admired Landing from afar for some time and am grateful that my play made the penultimate round.

Best of luck to them on the upcoming festival!

“Margo Asher” gets a nod

I’m very happy to report that my contemporary drama “Margo Asher Died Here” is a finalist in the 12th Annual New Play Festival sponsored by Tyler Civic Theatre Center of Tyler, TX!

Tyler Civic Theatre Center

Screen Shot 2020-06-17 at 11.22.14 PMTyler Civic Theatre Center has a long history, being founded as the Tyler Little Theatre back in 1927 and evolving over the years into its present form. The theater suffered through various ups and downs (including the tragic loss of its building in a fire in 1981) but lived to prove “the show must go on” and even moved into a larger, expansive theater space in 2000. Today, Tyler Civic Theatre Center produces a vibrant season of plays and musicals and provides a large number of theatrical and educational programs to its surrounding community, serving as a respected source of theater in East Texas generally.

The New Play Festival takes place on the afternoon of July 11th where a number of plays will be read before an audience, with the top-voted play slated for production by the theater in the 2021 season.

Many, many thanks to Tyler Civic Theatre Center for so graciously recognizing “Margo Asher Died Here” (the first such recognition for this play!) and for its inspiring commitment to theater!!

Enter “Margo Asher Died Here”

I’m thrilled to announce I have finished a brand new play – “Margo Asher Died Here” – of which I’m very proud and on which I have been working off-and-on for about a year.

“Margo Asher Died Here” is a two-hour, bittersweet drama about the controversy and chaos that ensues when two elderly residents of a nursing home engage in a sexual relationship.

"Margo Asher Died Here" Image

Taking place in a rural, sprawling nursing home, “Margo Asher Died Here” tells the story of an old man and an old woman, both of whom have spent their lives in subjugation and inconsequence, who are discovered one evening to be having sex. As their relationship deepens, it quickly impacts those around the couple, creating a civil war among the nursing home’s staff and tearing asunder the romantic relationship between the old man’s son and the old woman’s daughter. Over time, the controversy grows greater and greater, the battle lines grow deeper and deeper, and the questions become ever starker… Are the old man and the old woman using sex to express some great burst of freedom and life – or is this something darker? Could it be rape – and if so, what role does the head nurse really play in all of this… and what might be her motivations?

“Margo Asher” is a moving, sometimes droll, sometimes bitter, more often reflective look at how human beings grapple with powerlessness, either those who are powerless themselves or who witness powerlessness in others.
